Italy unfortunately insists on speaking Italian...

Here is a link to a strange article.

For whatever reason, the author(s) do their best to make an Italian requirement that non-EU citizens be functional in ... Italian seem sinister and intolerant. Similar efforts by Austria and the UK aren't described sympathetically either. Note that the comments (mostly by Americans) are almost unanimously in favor of the law and express the desire that the US should follow in Italy's footsteps.

Should EU countries insist on immigrants learning the local language? What about within the EU? Should Poland make long term residence by non-Poles dependent on knowledge of Polish?
